Investment and recycling: what Uzbekistan plans to do with garbage
The Solid Waste Management (MSW) Strategy for 2019-2028, developed by the State Committee on Ecology and Environmental Protection, suggests a transition from outdated algorithms used in the field of MSW management to modern ones.
The strategy has identified priorities for the treatment of solid waste. First priority is slowing down and reducing the growth rate formation of MSW. Second priority should become the reuse of raw materials, energy, products and materials obtained from MSW. Third one – use of MSW as recyclable materials in production. Fourth – energy use of MSW: extraction of biogas and gas synthesis from for further use as an alternative fuel for the production of electrical and thermal energy. And, finally, safe storage, isolation and disposal of residual (not recyclable) MSW.
It is noted that it is necessary to create conditions for attracting foreign direct investment, borrowed funds of international financial institutions and grants for implementing projects in the field of solid waste management, as well as assess the risks of the negative impact of solid waste landfills on the environment for the subsequent modernization and optimization of their amount.
